20 DAY READING CHALLENGE

Challenge your students to diversify their reading habits with this fun reading challenge!

Reading challenges are a fun way to generate excitement for reading, and motivate those reluctant readers! While a year-long challenge is optimal, why not start out with a simple one to get started?!

How the Challenge Started

On winter break 2019 I decided I wanted to create something to engage the readers at my readers in the year ahead…2020. The goal was to encourage a larger reading selection in the early years, and broaden their tastes for the future.

I created this 20 Day Reading Challenge for students to complete and record their reading. I included a variety of prompts to include genres, topics, text types, diversity, and familiarity.

I handed them out to many students the first week of January, and it was well received! The students at my school are very enthusiastic, so there was a lot of buzz to start the new year!

(I’ve updated this post since the original date….so we all know there was A LOT more buzz ahead in 2020 than my reading challenge! 😣)

Not just for a library!

If you are not in a library role, you can still have your students complete this challenge independently, or complete it as a class. I think the class option would be so fun to do during your read-aloud sessions!

I debated whether or not I should include prizes, but I decided against it because I don’t want students to feel pressured to rush through the challenge. Instead, I added their names (and challenge papers) to a small bulletin board to recognize their reading success!
