4 Fun Groundhog Day Activities

Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd, is a fun way to teach kids in Kindergarten to Grade 3 about a unique winter tradition. Using books, online activities, and printables, you can make learning about groundhogs and the history of Groundhog Day both fun and educational!


Groundhog Day isn’t just about predicting the weather—it’s a playful celebration that sparks curiosity and brings some excitement to a long winter.

Whether the groundhog sees its shadow or not, it’s the perfect excuse to dive into fun activities, spark learning, and enjoy stories about this furry little weather forecaster.

NO-PREP GROUNDHOG LESSONS

Many of us don’t have extra time in the day to research and create extra lesson plans for “fun” topics. So, I created two (identical) Groundhog Day resources for you to share with your students. If you want to do a whole-class lesson, check out the Groundhog Day Google Slides lesson, and follow it up with matching differentiated printables.

If you want to “assign” some groundhog fun, check out the Boom Cards (with audio) for sharing. Either way, you’ll learn some interesting facts about groundhogs AND a bit about the history and relevance of this annual celebration.
